Tacoma Power area · problem guide
No power in Tacoma or Pierce County
First question: is it the street or just your house? Tacoma Power fixes the street. An electrician fixes what is on your side of the meter.
Step 1: rule out a Tacoma Power outage
Check the outage map or call Tacoma Power at 253-502-8602. Call once; the line backs up during windstorms. (Tacoma Public Utilities — Outages & Safety)
A wire on the ground, on a fence or on a car: stay at least a car length back and call 911. Treat it as live.
Step 2: if neighbors have power and you do not
- Open the panel with dry hands. Look for a main or branch breaker sitting in the middle position.
- Push it fully off, then on, one time. If it snaps back off, leave it and call an electrician.
- Half the house dark, lights dim or flickering, or a buzz at the meter base: these point to a service or neutral fault. That needs a licensed electrician, and sometimes Tacoma Power too.
When it is an electrician job
House-only outage after the steps above, a burning smell at the panel, or a meter base pulled off the siding by a tree limb. Before anyone works on your panel, look up the contractor license on WA L&I Verify.

Tacoma Power customers: what to do in order
- 1. Check whether it is the grid: Look at Tacoma Power’s outage map or call 253-502-8602. Lines get busy in storms, so call once. (Tacoma Public Utilities — Outages & Safety)
- 2. Tell them what they need: Your name, the affected address, a callback number, when it started, and anything you can see: a tree in a line, a wire down, a loud pop, a broken pole.
